The concept of compassion in the justice system - or rather the lack of it - will be a familiar one to readers of, and contributors to, your letters page.
That so many feel compelled to write and draw attention to what are, for the majority of a law-abiding electorate, anomalies and injustices in sentencing, is surely good evidence that something, on too many occasions, is seriously wrong with the system as it now stands. The aloofness - bordering at times on arrogance - displayed by the judiciary must also add to, if not create, a sense of frustration and helplessness on the part of those most affected by the suffering caused by incidents of random violence or criminally negligent behaviour.See the full content of this document
