Villagers have hit out at a utility company for failing to alert them to a major gas escape 200 yards from their homes. When a digger damaged the pipe on a building site at Norton Fitzwarren, near Taunton, on Friday, the roar of escaping gas could be heard 200 yards away.

But villagers thought the noise must simply be the sound of water being pumped away because torrential rain and flooding had hit the area. They say they only heard there was a gas leak through Chinese whispers that led some to call utility company Wales and West to check the situation.
