Summary
Civility can seem like an old fashioned concept. Ask the next person you meet on the bus or train - especially if you don't offer them your seat - what their views are on the subject, and the chances are they will tell you that we are on a depressing spiral of decline when it comes to everyday politeness. A new report, co- funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Economic and Social Research Council, whose expertise we should respect, has discovered that far from a thing of the past, civility is something that people still care deeply about wherever they live. But it warns that long-term trends are making civility hard to maintain.
