Summary
Although Neil Deacon (Your Say, October 4) is right in saying that much of the energy used in incandescent lamps is dissipated in heat, that heat is not wasted. In Northern Europe, cold usually accompanies the dark and that is when we use artificial lighting the most. The heat dissipated is not lost, but is used to heat the house, as is the heat energy from fridges, washing machines and dishwashers.
If everyone switched to low- energy light bulbs, we would find that we would have to turn up the temperature on our central heating, resulting in more energy being used.See the full content of this document
