A statistics watchdog renewed a warning over politicians' use of crime figures after an investigation into claims that David Cameron misled the public.

Sir Michael Scholar, chairman of the UK Statistics Authority, spoke out after the Prime Minister told MPs that violent and gun crime "nearly doubled" under Labour. He said he stood by a previous ruling that the accusation was based on an "impossible" comparison of data that was "likely to damage public trust" in the figures.
