Unsafe Harness Costs Firm Pounds 12,000

Summary

Bosses at an agricultural contracting firm have been fined thousands of pounds after health and safety inspectors found they were sending their workers up onto the roof of a barn with a home- made safety harness.

Ashton Farms Ltd, from Steeple Ashton near Trowbridge, pleaded guilty to two counts of exposing employees to a fall from height risk, after an inspector visited work going on at Manor Farm in Grittleton, near Chippenham in Wiltshire in October last year. Magistrates heard the inspector found the two employees constructing a roof on a barn without adequate edge protection or nets to prevent them falling. They were also using a homemade running line and harness system, which would not have been good enough to stop them falling either.
