Attorney General Baroness Scotland was under renewed pressure after one of her own aides quit in protest at her breach of immigration law.

Stephen Hesford, parliamentary private secretary to the Government's legal officers, insisted it was "unprincipled" for the peer to remain in post after being fined Pounds 5,000 for employing a housekeeper with no right to work in the UK. The resignation wrecked Gordon Brown's efforts to draw a line under the episode ahead of the crunch G20 summit in the US.
