Times Gone By

Summary


Over the past 175 years Bristol Zoo and its famous gardens have changed beyond all recognition.

Would time travellers, I wonder, coming back today, find anything familiar? One thing they would recognise is the main entrance facing the Downs, which, despite modifications over the years, dates back to the zoo's early years. These lodge gates, as well as the entrance in Guthrie Road, opposite Clifton College, are now listed as being of architectural merit.

Times Gone By

In fact the zoo has made considerable efforts to conserve, or adapt to new uses if possible, many of its older buildings and artifacts.

The bear pit, once the site of an old lime kiln and now housing the modern aquarium, was a very popular attraction for over 130 years. It had to go but the wooden pole, which the bears would once climb to take food from visitors, has been preserved and can still be seen alongside the pathway.
