Most people of a certain age can instantly remember where they were the day England won the 1966 World Cup. David Lafferty was no exception, although he was always able to say that on a tumultuous day in English sporting history, he too was breaking new ground - by staying under it for 130 days.

On March 27, 1966, as a fresh-faced 27-year-old caving enthusiast, he bade farewell to his wife Uta and two-year-old daughter Jacqueline and made his way 380 feet (116 metres) under the Mendip Hills in Somerset.
