The Golden Age of Nursing Is Now Gone ; Letters

Summary

I agree with the report on hospital training by K Jabbey. I was a nurse during the war and the routine there was very different. We all started as probationers and literally started from the bottom up. The first piece of medical equipment we were given was a bed pan. A large metal one which had to be emptied, washed and disinfected after use, no throw-away items then. There was a very strict matron, a sister and staff nurse on every ward. We had lectures by the sister tutor and the surgeons and took preliminary exams and final exams. In those days we all lived in a nurses home attached to the hospital, very strict rules and very little off duty time.

My daughter is also a retired nurse and she also comments on the different training now. In spite of the wartime raids and rationing, I can still remember some very happy times.
