Summary
I refer to your newspaper report, headlined "Discussion on Pounds 11 million Tesco bid to buy pool site". (Western Daily Press, Saturday January 15) Are the good, and worthy citizens of Bridgwater so enamoured with food that they require yet another supermarket? Consider the wealth of choice they have - Morrisons, Sainsbury, Asda, Lidl, Iceland and, oh yes, Farm Fresh. If this proposal goes ahead, there is a possibility that one of the others will eventually close. A possible candidate is Aldi, which makes a valuable contribution to the town centre shops.
Unlike at Langport, Tesco marketing executives are in danger of not getting their homework right. Tesco will not 'dent' - I forecast this - the synergistic relationship that exists between Sainsbury's and Lidl's - both catering for different but complimentary markets. Valuable, because of closeness and parking, and proximity to other stores, and the provision to obtain fuel.See the full content of this document
