Temperatures were expected to plunge as low as -12[masc ordinal]C in parts of the West Country last night, making some of the heaviest snowfalls in 30 years turn to deadly ice.

Farmers, villagers and commuters across the region were expected to wake up to more snow chaos this morning, with conditions made even more dangerous by sheets of black ice on roads and a likelihood of a thick, "rock solid" coating on yesterday's fresh powder.
