How do you get there? Because we had only rudimentary maps, we asked for directions from Central Florida (at Westgate River Ranch, 25 miles east of Lake Wales, where we had been staying) and were handed a printed route courtesy of Expedia. To say this was confusing is an understatement. We would have been better off simply heading south from Lake Wales, then turning right (west) towards Sarasota and asking for Siesta Beach. We made it, eventually, via a back country route. Avenida Messina is at the north end, the quieter end, of beautiful Siesta Beach.
. First impressions: We pulled up outside the offices about 2.30pm to find all the parking places were full. We tried to park opposite at the Broken Egg cafe but warnings about noncustomers being towed away put us off, so we parked next to the offices outside The Hub, a lively-looking bar and restaurant. Our welcome at the Tropical Breeze friendly but our rooms weren't quite ready. We took the opportunity to grab a bite of lunch at The Hub. We returned 30 minutes later and our keys to number 161 Avenida Messina, were waiting, as was a residents' parking permit to be displayed in the car - "if you need any more help, just ask".
