Showers Hit Drivers and Sport

Summary

BRISTOL 16 Minehead 3 Taunton Salisbur y Weymouth Plymouth 15 Heavy rain and gale force winds lashed the West yesterday as a traditional English summer returned. Southerly winds gusting up to 50mph hit the Dorset coast, while persistent heavy rain brought some relief to drought-stricken farmers but disruption to roads and travel plans. After the driest first five months of a year since 1910, there was no danger of flooding from a day's worth of rain, but surface water on many major roads proved a problem for drivers.

Hereford Gloucester Cardiff Swindon BRISTOL Minehead 11 Taunton Salisbur y Weymouth Plymouth The M5 between Taunton and Bristol saw traffic at a crawl for around 50 miles. The heavy rain caused a large amount of surface water on the carriageways, and meant that more people than usual headed for Cribbs Causeway, near Bristol, for a day out of the rain. Traffic police from Tewkesbury to Weymouth warned drivers to be wary of standing water in isolated spots, as the first meaningful rain fell on the West for months. The rain also affected sporting fixtures across the West, as well as a large number of events, including a parade at Wootton Bassett for Royal British Legion branches.
