Saving Lives Comes at a Justifiable Price ; Letters

Summary

Re: Derek Chorley's letter in Saturday's WDP. I applaud you, Mr Chorley, for supporting the RNLI because without people like you, our volunteer crews would not be able to put to sea. Yes there are certainly a few top staff at the RNLI earning the type of figures you state. However, running a world-class rescue service comes at a price and in my humble opinion the wages paid are justified.

In 2009 the charity's total running costs were Pounds 148 million. In that year the RNLI rescued 8,235 people. Neither myself nor any of my crew ever think of money when we launch to someone in trouble at sea because we are all volunteers. However, we also know that we have the back-up of a charity that is second to none, and if we get a problem when we are at sea, we know that within six hours we will have replacement equipment on station so that we don't have to go off service.
