Before he does untold damage, Prime Minister David Cameron must relieve Ken Clarke from his duties as Justice Minister. Once the "big beast" in the Tory ranks, this ageing grandee has become nothing more than a tame pussy cat.
Mr Clarke wants to release more offenders from prison early and send even less criminals to prison in the first place. He says that rehabilitation is the buzz word, not punishment for crime. What he really means is that he wants to save money rather than put the safety of the law-abiding citizen first. In the long run this will prove a dangerous move if the Conservatives want to remain a dominant force in British politics.
