A ring lost by a grief-stricken aristocrat in the grounds of a Wiltshire castle has been remarkably returned to his descendants 180 years later, following a 40-year-long search for its rightful owner.

The mourning ring belonged to Sir Thomas Hare, a Norfolk landowner, and was dedicated to his beloved wife Ann Elizabeth, who died in 1823 after undergoing an operation. But several years later, while returning from visiting his late wife's family in the West, he stopped overnight at Devizes Castle and lost the ring somewhere in the grounds.
