Retiring Sergeant Major Stretchered at the Double

Summary

A sergeant major was stretchered off his base as he marked the end of a 39-year Army career.

To the strains of Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries belting out over the camp loudspeakers, Sgt Major Steve Titley was carried out of the Land Warfare Centre in Warminster garrison. The 54-year-old, of the Military Provost Guard Service, thought he was going to spend the day showing the Commandant of the centre around the new operations room which he helped to set up. He was then surprised to be asked to open the facility and unveil a plaque which revealed it had been named Titley's Ops Room in his honour. As he stepped outside the guard room he was 'invited' to lie on a waiting stretcher and was ceremoniously carried to the main gate by his colleagues.
