A commentator on national radio suggested earlier this week that the Royal British Legion's iconic poppy was sometimes used and abused by newspapers in order to sell more copies.

The Poppy Appeal's emblem is remarkably resilient. It has survived for the best part of a century and its message has always been clearly understood. Occasionally, critics have mistakenly accused it of having a nationalist dimension. Not so. And, as the Remembrance coverage in this newspaper has illustrated this week, the appeal of the poppy endures, faithful still to its original mission.
