Summary


I f there is such a place as Paradise in the wine world, it must be Chile. The vineyards lie between two of the planet's great physical features, the Andes and the Pacific. The climate is glorious - irrigation from sun-melted mountainpeak snow compensates for the scant rainfall - and in the wine regions the landscape is verdant, rolling and lush; it teems with exotic wildlife.

But a week ago today, this Eden was devastated by a powerful earthquake, killing hundreds of people and leaving more than a million injured or homeless. Although the wine-producing area of Chile covers the tiniest fraction of the nation, the epicentre of the quake has struck at the very heart of the country's longest- established vineyard region, the Maule Valley. It has flattened the historic town of Curico, and devastated vital infrastructure.
