In no way do I wish to glamorise World War II, but for me as a child it was an adventure, taking me from inner-city streets to the fresh green world of the countryside. To some extent I feel guilty for having had such a good time.

My family lived in Stratford, east London, when war was declared. My father worked for Anglo American Oil, and my mother was a nurse. I was the youngest child, my sister and brother being 10 or so years older.

Our Anderson shelter was hand-dug into our back garden by all of us. My father became an air raid warden and was often called to families buried under piles of bricks and mortar.
