Summary


There is one winter survivor on the allotment. The humble shallot gives you, at least, something to nurture during the winter. From the moment you plant the onion-like bulbs, you know they'll hang on in there come what may. Like the Geordies of the vegetable world, they're hard as nails and seemingly impervious to the cold, but still surprisingly sweet when they open up.

You can plant them as early as September - shallots that is, not Geordies - but early February is supposed to be the prime moment to introduce your shallots to the ground.
