A few years ago, the journey Caroline Hannah made to Lethbridge Primary School would have been little more than routine. Yesterday it carried an emotional significance that few of us can identify with. That those few exist, though, make the circumstances of her visit no less excusable.

Caroline's son Tyrese was hit by a speeding driver on his way to school while she walked alongside him. In a flash, her world was shattered before her eyes - the now all-too-common sight of a road accident involving pedestrians unfolding by the local primary school. Yesterday she helped launch a campaign by pressure group Brake to cut the number of accidents involving children so other parents do not have to experience what has left her "in a shell". One in 11 children in the West have been victim to road accidents, most of which can be attributed to speed. Anyone reading this cannot fail to wish that figure to be lower, or better still, eradicated, but for some reason the statistics continue to get worse. Even more frustrating is that despite the fact transport bodies have had decades to come up with ways of slowing traffic down, it is still a subject they find vexing and baffling.
