Alex Gidman refused to hold the pitch responsible after Gloucestershire were bowled out for just 86 on the opening day of a hugely eventful County Championship Division Two contest against Northants.

An astonishing 23 wickets fell as ball held sway over bat. Although a green-tinged pitch and cloudy conditions accounted, in large part, for the visitors being dismissed for 186 in their first innings, Gloucestershire's batsmen were not without blame. Shell- shocked captain Gidman was certainly in no mood to make excuses after emerging from a post-match dressing-room inquest.
