Patriotism Need Not Exclude Compassion

Summary


Patriotism is generally regarded as a virtue, something to be encouraged. It is indeed necessary and desirable, when engaging in a just war that needs to be won. But it can be so dangerous. It was German patriotism, which regarded Hitler as a saviour of the nation, that led to World War II.

Patriotism in peacetime implied working for the well-being and prosperity of the people of one's own country. But we are the fourth richest nation in the world; we do not need to be any richer.
