He remembers that on his last evening as an MP he took himself to the House of Commons library, where he found a comfortable armchair. There, he contemplated his time as a member and recalled his father and grandfather who, between them, had sat in the House for more than 40 years.

In fact, it was not the end of a family association as he imagined. His son, Nick, was elected a Conservative MP in 2005.
