The book pairs chaste illustrations from 19th-century periodicals with apt and often racy captions.

Looking through my collection of Victorian magazines on a wet Sunday afternoon, Andrew pointed out one of the typically over- posed and melodramatic illustrations and suggested that the character ought to be saying. It was very funny. And the closer we studied the material, the more potential for comedy we found. It seemed like a great idea for a book.
