I was saddened to read of the death at the age of 82 of Sir Cyril Smith. I first met this giant of a man when he came to Tiverton promoting the virtues of the Liberal Party. At that time he was the Liberal MP for Rochdale and later the Liberal Democrat MP.
During my time as a journalist in the West Country I covered the comings and goings of many politicians but none of them were as honest, forthright and ebullient as Sir Cyril. He was a big man in every way - said to be 29 stone at his heaviest!See the full content of this document
