Newbury Sees Off Hostile Bid From the Inside Track

Newbury Racecourse yesterday saw off a hostile takeover attempt from its biggest shareholder following a three-month battle.

The Berkshire track - home of the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup - thwarted the pounds35 million bid from investment firm Guinness Peat Group (GPG), which owns almost 21 per cent of the business. The tussle pitted the pounds30m racecourse against GPG, which has a stock market value of more than pounds750m and investments worldwide.
