Hopes were high, when David Cameron replaced Gordon Brown in Downing Street, that an attitude towards agriculture that was at best ambivalent and at worst downright hostile, would quickly transform into the kind of encouragement and support that the countryside needs. It hasn't happened.

Jim Paice, the farming minister, is a hands-on, straight-talking political operator with a rural background who has made great strides towards tackling the biggest single scourge affecting livestock farmers - bovine TB. But that aside, on the really big questions of making food production a priority to reduce Britain's reliance on imports and feed a growing global population, we have seen too little of substance from the Tory-Lib Dem coalition.
