Ten years ago Steve Dayman and his wife Gloria set up Meningitis UK to fund research into the disease after it claimed the life of their 14-month-old son Spencer. Spencer died in 1982 of a combination of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia.

At the time Mr Dayman was told it was unlikely that a way of eradicating it would be discovered in his lifetime. Undaunted he went on to help raise millions of pounds and now believes that a vaccine that will eradicate the disease is as little as 10 years away.
