I Have always had my doubts about well-paid Members of Parliament spending a token night on the streets with the homeless, living for a week on the dole pay, or taking over a one-parent family for a similar period.

It's all been done by members who emerge from their "trials" looking virtuous and claiming that they are now much more knowledgeable about the plight of others than they otherwise would have been. Sometimes, but not always, these stunts are undertaken at the behest of television companies.
