The average male Adelie penguin has a tough life. Every year he has to take the plunge with thousands of his contemporaries for the 6,000-mile swim back to his hereditary Antarctic breeding ground.

Then he has to build the finest stony nest a female penguin could desire, making sure he betters the efforts of his rivals to be sure of winning the girl. Some play it straight and embrace the hard slog, but others are tempted by a life of crime, as displayed in last night's spring episode of this fabulous documentary series, Frozen Planet, BBC One.
