July Is a Month Where [...]

Summary

July is a month where everything is happening in the garden, and with some warmer temperatures at last, everything has begun to happen at full speed. So the chances are, that wherever you look in the vegetable garden there will be plenty of jobs that need doing!

One of the nicest of these is harvesting, and by July there should be a little of nearly everything to pick and get in to the kitchen. From salads, to peas, baby broad beans, early potatoes, strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and blueberries, this is our first month when we find we can make a whole meal from what we are picking. Growth can be so fast in July that some of it will need stopping. If climbing beans are reaching the tops of their canes, then it's time to pinch out the top, to encourage strong side stem growth too. Similarly, some tomatoes, cordon grown ones in particular, will need to have fruiting trusses pinched out, once they've produced up to four trusses. And fruit trees, particularly apples and pears, can have some of the smaller fruits removed, by rubbing them away between finger and thumb, so that the remaining fruit can grow bigger. Trees which are heavily laden, might have some fruit removed, or branches supported in some way, before they break.
