I t was a welcome, indulgent end to what had been a horrible day. As I drove home to visit my family in Cheltenham in torrential rain, my windscreen wipers had broken as I negotiated busy traffic on the M5.

Four hours later after waiting on the hard shoulder to be rescued and then getting a lift, bedraggled and very hungry, I was glad to finally walk through the door with the knowledge that we were going out for a curry. And a brilliant curry at that.
