Where do you go for a family meal when you're all properly hungry but don't want to spend more than Pounds 10 a head for adults and a fiver on the kids? That was the conundrum facing The Food Inspector's family recently when 23 of us gathered together for a family holiday in East Devon. We'd all taken turns to cook vast communal meals and by day six fancied a break from the mass catering and washing up. But none of us wanted to stump up the several hundred pounds to take us all out for a serious restaurant meal.

Sadly, the all-too-obvious solution would have been a trip to McDonald's. But even though some of the smaller members of the party greeted that idea with enthusiasm, the older ones among us wanted to eat proper food, with a knife and fork. And after a day out with 22 members of your family, wouldn't you prefer to have some alcohol with your meal? I know I would.
