Fatal Contact with Asbestos On Navy Ship

Summary

Five months aboard a ship as a Naval cadet proved fatal to Richard Barber, when nearly 38 years later he died of asbestos- related mesothelioma. Mr Barber, 66, a time-share manager, of Woodlands Crescent, Poundbury, Dorchester, died on April 13 in Dorset's Joseph Weld hospital.

At an inquest at Dorchester this week, West Dorset coroner Michael Johnston told Mr Barber's widow that there is now official acceptance that "everyone who served in the Navy until the late 1980s was exposed to asbestos. When I first started in this job 30 years ago I used to get the odd case but I have had three cases this month. It is terrifying that we haven't reached the crest of the wave."
