Derek Mead's family has farmed the rich soils of North Somerset for generations.

As he looks out across some of his 1,600 rolling acres of grazing land, keeping a careful eye on some of his 350 milk cows, 200 beef cattle, and his flock of 1,000 sheep - the 64-year-old must feel a flush of pride in his successful farming business. But almost a decade ago, the whole enterprise seemed to be on a precipice, as foot-andmouth disease swept through the country, obliterating great swathes of the nation's farms.
