While spring can seem well underway elsewhere in the garden, awaiting the first crops of the new season in the fruit and vegetable garden can call for more patience. The emerging crimson shoots of the trusty rhubarb are therefore a welcome sight.
Rhubarb is a fully hardy perennial, spreading by fleshy rhizomes to form sturdy crowns. It is one of the easiest crops to grow, being happy in a range of soils, ideally on a sunny site. For a generous harvest, a mulch of wellrotted compost or manure spread around the crowns in late winter will provide much-needed nitrogen for the year ahead; but be careful not to bury the crowns.See the full content of this document
