Although it was an area that had been inhabited for hundreds of years, it was not until 1853 that Sneyd Park and Stoke Bishop started to become one of Bristol's most upmarket suburbs.
Situated well away from the city's industrial hub, with its unpleasant smells and chimneys that belched smoke, it was a place where the wealthy citizens began to build themselves large mansions.
