Reader essay Cecily Collingridge, from Bridgwater, Somerset, replies to Cancer Research UK ambassador Chris Geiger's piece in Saturday's Western Daily Press about smoking The juxtaposition of Chris Geiger's rant against smokers placed below the thoughtprovoking Saturday essay by Brian Jones about self- centredness and attitudes towards the homeless was a stark contrast.

The former could learn a lot from the latter and the sooner the better in my opinion. I was particularly struck by Mr Jones' point that "there is a need for all of us to concentrate a little more upon what we could be doing, rather than continually getting bogged down in what we think others should be doing".

Society these days seems all too quick to jump to narrow-minded, judgemental conclusions that lack basic humanity or understanding.

Chris Geiger's piece demonstrates this to perfection. He started off quoting something about a dog owner from a prior letters page.
