Minimum pricing of alcoholic drinks, a proposal made last year by the Chief Medical Officer Sir Ian Donaldson which is backed by so many members of Parliament and lobbyists that it might one day become law, is believed by its supporters to be a workable method of dealing with problem-drinking.
This principle of minimum pricing - let's call it MP for short - is this: all alcoholic drinks are rated in "units", each of one centilitre of ethanol, or pure alcohol.
