Last year, it seems, brought the most propitious combination of climatic conditions imaginable for the production of fermented apple juice: precisely the mixture of sun and rain, and all the correct temperature fluctuations which John or Martin Thatcher would have organised had either been standing in as God while the Almighty was on sabbatical.
