Trumpet virtuoso Guy Barker has put some brass behind musicians from Frank Sinatra to Sting, and Dizzy Gillespie to Paloma Faith. As he tunes up for Upton Jazz Festival this weekend in Gloucestershire, he tells Sally Bailey how it all began On a 1960s film set, stuntman Ken Barker kicks around in the wings between takes. As the rain stops filming he gets out his clarinet, opens a book of duets, and starts to learn.

It's not quite the hobby one might expect from a man who dives through windows with his body on fire for a living. But this is the way a dad decided to encourage his son to achieve great things as a trumpeter.
