Lucy Ash's unnerving report on life in Chechnya in Stolen Brides revealed two things. Ostensibly a story about bride-stealing, it also uncovered the scars left on the population by two wars.

Lucy had travelled to Chechnya to look at the phenomenon of bride stealing. Over 40 per cent of women are kidnapped for marriage. Some of the women may be complicit in their own kidnapping, some may know (and approve) of the men who kidnap them, and some are taken by strangers.
