I read the news of the Avonmouth power station approval with a very heavy heart - and on Valentine's Day too.

Bio-fuel power-generation as a "green" solution has to be one of the largest cons forced upon us in recent years. How on earth can the clearance of ancient rainforest - the "lungs of the planet" - be an acceptable action when the threat of climate change is already being felt throughout the world? When more than one billion people live on the point of starvation, how is it morally okay for us to encourage the cultivation of crops for fuel, not food? Is leaving the lights on really that important? This Government promised to be the "greenest" one in history. The over-riding of our local council's decision is a travesty; the coalition sings the praises of localism and small government yet imposes its will where it desires - this time to devastating results.
