Hundreds of spectators gathered along Burnham's esplanade on Saturday to watch the drama unfold as the Royal Navy and RAF bomb squad detonated the 1,500lb shell discovered off Stert Island by fisherman on Thursday afternoon.

A 100ft tower of water burst into the sky as the mine, which had been buried in mud for more than 60 years, finally exploded shortly before midday.
