The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has complained to the BBC following the broadcast of an item on identifying wild ponies using the illegal practice of ear notching. The piece appeared on the programme Countryfile on Sunday, October 31, featuring a farmer in Snowdonia, north Wales, carrying out the annual health check of wild ponies, which involves bringing them all down into the town.

During the programme, presenter Jules Hudson asked one owner of the ponies, farmer Gareth Wyn Jones, how he can tell which pony is which.
