An odd genre, merry monks. Years ago you used to see them in all kinds of people's houses, folks whose nearest contact with things ecclesiastical otherwise was their St Michael's underwear. Merry monks and huntsmen sitting around a blazing log fire at the end of their exertions: what was all that about, then? The painting we see here is one of a range of pictures on offer at Charterhouse's sale in Sherborne on July 31, and for those who like this kind of thing, it has the lot - a merry monk, laughing cavalier, dancing gypsy girl and a fire which, in truth, looks as if another log or two on it wouldn't come amiss. Technically, though, it's a very decent figurative painting, and on the right day, Richard Bromell is expecting perhaps Pounds 1,500-Pounds 2,000.
