The West Country's long association with aviation assures the region of its own chapter in any history of flight.
One of the names most closely associated with the industry is George Dowty and this year is the 80th anniversary of the first company he founded, which developed into a world leader. It was called Aircraft Components. Born in Pershore, George Dowty was employed as a draughtsman by the Gloster Aircraft Company (GAC) at its Sunningend Works in Cheltenham, when he formed Aircraft Components. In truth, it was a company in name only, because Aircraft Components had no premises, no staff and no orders.
